Education

The Community Head Start Program is a community-based program which focuses on early childhood development and is funded by Public Health Canada. The program was established to support the mental, intellectual, spiritual, and physical growth of children.

Enrollment

To apply to the Head Start Program for their child, parents must provide a copy of the child’s birth certificate, immunization cards and medical information. Applications to the program may be downloaded here.

Enrollment begins in September. Upon entering the program, children will receive an assessment by the Child Development Centre in Smithers. The child’s hearing, speech patterns, vision and physical health are assessed. If any child needs special attention, a representative from the Child Development Centre will be available to visit weekly to work with that child. 

The Village of the Hagwilget offers the Head Start Program in the village Small Hall. Up to eight three to four year old students are accepted into the program per teacher per school year. The school year runs from September to June, and classes go from 9am to 2:45pm daily. If more parents wish to sign up their children for the program than there are slots available, they must accompany their child in the classroom. All children must be potty trained and able to eat solid foods. Parental involvement in the Head Start Program is strongly encouraged. 

The children participating in the Head Start Program learn about local cultural activities and the Wet’suweten language throughout the whole school year. The instructor also hosts a widely supported parents craft and art nights where parents and the instructor work together to complete small arts and crafts projects.
